A Lesson in the art of Wabi-Sabi.

Our Hexagonal Paulowina Trivets are special for a few reasons. Its family-run producer, Iwamoto Kiyoshi Shouten in Ishikawa Prefecture was founded in 1913, specializing in artfully hand-crafted household items from Paulowina trees. The wood is light and hollow in the center, making it ideal for trivets. A special charring technique gives these its warm, textured finish.

The artisans work with the natural grain of the wood, causing the hole, grains and its unique marks on each one to vary. The Japanese call this Wabi-Sabi, an aesthetic and philosophy that sees beauty in imperfection and impermanence, appreciating the unique character of objects that otherwise may be seen as aged, flawed or incomplete as a sign of authenticity. It is a concept that permeates much of our collection at TOIRO. If you look closely at these photos, you can see the specialness of Wabi-Sabi here.
